Avoiding No-zone Accidents
Anyone who has driven on the highway for any length of time has learned to share the road with a veritable army of commercial trucks, semis, 18-wheelers, and more. Unfortunately, many drivers treat these large trucks no differently than other motor vehicles – a mistake which could lead to serious injury or death.
The size of 18-wheelers and other large trucks not only makes them heavy and powerful – it also creates enormous blind spots in various areas around the truck. These blind spots, dubbed "no-zones," are big enough to completely hide other vehicles from a trucker's view, creating a very high risk of collision.
No-zone Overview
There are essentially three types of "no-zone" surrounding a commercial truck. They include:
- The rear no-zone. The long trailers that commercial trucks carry mean that a truck driver cannot see directly behind his vehicle. Any cars driving too close behind an 18-wheeler are invisible to a truck driver.
- The side no-zones. On each side of a truck runs a long no-zone. These no-zones are very similar to the blind spots on typical passenger cars – just bigger. People driving anywhere beside an 18-wheeler should be very careful to stay out of these no-zones.
- The front no-zone. Truck drivers ride in elevated cabs. While this allows them a good view of the road ahead, it severely limits their ability to see the area directly in front of their truck.
